At its source the river is fed by the first magnitude Blue Springs, open to the public as Blue Springs Recreation Area, managed by Jackson County. The river flows 92.5 miles and empties into the Dead Lakes Recreation Area before feeding into the Apalachicola River and on into the Gulf.
