Eastford is a rural town in an area known for its beauty, natural surroundings and outdoor activities enhanced by lakes, ponds, streams and thousands of acres protected forests. Nahaco Farms abuts the Natchaug State Forest. The town features thousands of acres of State Forest that runs contiguous with thousands more into Chaplin. Several hundred yards away from Nahaco Farms is the Bigelow Brook where the state leases land along the brook for a footpath for hiking and fishing. The Bigelow merges with the Still River to form the Natchaug River where there are 3 popular campgrounds along the river on RT 198 (the Natchaug and Salmon Rivers are considered the two best trout rivers in Eastern CT). Residents of Eastford get to live in a place where others go stay to escape and relax.
A 1.8 mile drive from Nahaco Farms is Camp Nahaco Park on 147 acre Crystal Pond. Open to town residents only, the residents of Eastford and Woodstock purchased the former 134 acre boyscout camp so residents could enjoy swimming, boating, fishing and hiking at the lake. There is a trail to the 2.5 acre trout pond. Residents can rent the old dining hall for private events for $10 per hour for up to 3 hours. Also in the immediate area is the 7,840 Yale Forest. CT DEP issues hunting permits for the state forests as well as the Yale University Forest. To the west the 35 mile Nipmuck Trail goes through the Yale Forest following streams and lakes for most of the way as it runs north to isolated Breakneck Pond located in Bigelow State Park (part of the 9,000 acre Nipmuck State Forest) in neighboring Union. Yale Forest including Boston Hollow, area wise located to the west of Nahaco Farms, is identified as a hot spot on Cornell Universitys worldwide bird watch web site, with 123 species of birds identified there. More swimming, boating and fishing is available 5 miles away at 82 acre Halls Pond in Eastford which is a state bass management lake and only has 6 houses on its shores. 7 miles away is Bigelow Hollow State Park in Union with 287 Mashapaug Lake (which holds the state record for largemouth bass, the former 2007 state record for white catfish, and former state record for brown trout), while also 7 miles away is 73 acre Black Pond in Woodstock (holds the state record yellow perch) where this is a boat ramp at the state forest near YMCA Camp Woodstock.
Centrally located as if it were the hub of a wheel for Southern New England, Eastford is accessible to employment/economic centers, services and points of interest in all directions. There are 5 hospitals in all directions within 33 minutes or less with the closest being Day Kimball in Putnam, 19 minutes, and Harrington Memorial in Southbridge, MA, 23 minutes. The little town center has looked pretty much the same for years, with Coriander Caf & Country Store, First Niagara Bank, the Post Office and Bowens Garage which is a Ford dealership that also sells gas. The Eastford elementary school serves grades K-9 while the regional high school for Eastford residents is Woodstock Academy. There are highly acclaimed private schools in neighboring towns as well; The Pomfret School (9-12) and Rectory School (K-9) in Pomfret, and the Hyde School (9-12) in Woodstock.
