Terrain: The topography of the ranch is extremely diverse and ranges from mountain peaks and timbered forest lands to wide valleys and open meadows. Elevations range from 7,800' to 9,800'. The lower country has open areas with scattered canopies of ponderosa pine and mountain oak. Timber increases on the mountain slopes, with principal cover being oak, pine, spruce, fir and quaking aspen.

Water: Water is plentiful on the Quinlan Ranch. Willow Creek heads in the high country and is the major drainage through the ranch. Besides Willow Creek, other water sources include numerous tributaries and mountain springs, along with over 25 ponds. The larger ponds are stocked with trout. Other water sources include five permitted water wells and sixty acre feet of priority water rights. These water rights are used to irrigate hay meadows and fill trout ponds.

Hunting/Recreation: The Quinlan Ranch is located in Mew Mexico's Unit 4, known by many as "Elk Central", due to the area's abundance of elk. In fact, even to non-hunters, the mention of Chama, New Mexico will often conjure images of trophy bull elk.

Hunting is big business on the Quinlan, and many improvements and management strategies have been implemented through the years. The number of elk permits issued by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is governed by a Special Management Plan. Currently, the ranch receives 63 bull elk rifle permits and 24 bull elk bow permits. Approximately 1,820 acres of the ranch has been game fenced and granted a Class A Game Park Permit, which gives the ranch the ability to raise their own private elk herd within the confines of the game fenced park. There are approximately 495 elk within the confines of the park currently. A 10,000 square foot state of the art elk handling barn is used for artificial insemination of approximately 120 cow elk. Numerous partially shaded paddocks house these cow elk with five mature breeder bull elk with Boone and Crockett scores of 400+ used for a backup to the AI program. In addition to the elk handling facility, the barn is equipped with a shop building, walk in game cooler, office, kitchen, downstairs apartment and five hunting guide apartments.

The Quinlan Ranch boasts some of the best elk hunting in the region, but mule deer are also trophy class. Mule deer are managed through selective harvest, and some world class deer have been taken on the property. Black bear and turkey are also common.

Improvements: The ranch is nicely improved by a roomy, partial two-story lodge. Construction on the lodge has been recently completed and features 11 bedrooms and 10 baths with a commercial kitchen and great room with rock fireplace. Hardwood floors and beautiful exposed beam ceilings in portions of the lodge compliment the fixtures and large windows. Two camp areas have also just been completed on the ranch. Both include bath house structures, covered cooking and eating area. Electricity is underground throughout the ranch.
