Five Springs Ranch
Location: This property is located north of John Day, Oregon in the heart of Eastern
Oregon.
Acreage: 2637 acres m/l
Elevation: 4400’-5000’
Vegetation: This ranch has not been grazed in the past three years. It has an excellent
foundation of native grasses and good stands of brush and willows along the creeks for keeping the streams cool for the aquatic life and trout.
Water: One truly unique item on this ranch is the amount of water. Fox Creek is a large

year round creek that is also a fish bearing creek. Steelhead return to Fox Creek every year to spawn. Mill Creek and Murphy Creek are also year round creeks and are tributaries to Fox Creek. There are many springs that can be found on the ranch including one spring that bears around 90 gallons per minute. A fishing pond is located up the Murphy Creek drainage that has held large trout in the past. Other small spring fed and “catch” ponds can be found located around the ranch.
Crops and Irrigation: There are approximately 80 acres irrigated with great water rights
out of Fox Creek. They are the oldest and first water rights on Fox Creek. These acres are currently in alfalfa and White Clover. A newer 60 acre seeding of dry land alfalfa/grass/ and clover was seeded in the spring of 2007 and should be realized when it starts to grow in 2008. Triticale and Wheat have been planted in other fields for rotation of crops. Elk and deer love them both from the spring when it starts to grow through the seasons to the winter when it provides winter feed for them. Together the ranch provides approximately 300 acres tillable.
Improvements: A very nice newly remodeled 1200 square foot 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom
cabin provides all the comforts of home. A large Trex deck on the North side of the house ensures that you’ll still be comfortable when you’re watching the elk and deer in the field. There are two large barns that have plenty of room for hay in the middle and also an adequate hay barn. A turn of the century home is located in the middle of the ranch next to Fox Creek. This home has a lot of character and with some time and money could be brought back to its original splendor. Fences for the most part are in fair to good condition but with the continuous high numbers of elk and deer they are hard to keep up. Access roads are rocked and are in good condition. Access in the winter usually should not be a problem since this area does not see large amounts of snowfall.
Wildlife:
Everything on this ranch has been done with wildlife in mind. Crops are planted and cultivated for spring, summer, and winter feed for the elk and deer. Bulls in the 360-370 class range and bucks from 180-200 are not uncommon to see on the ranch. Many times there have been in excess of 400 elk at one time during seasons. Not only crops keep these elk and deer here but good stands of cover in the form of thick trees and brush along the creeks. There are many other forms of wildlife including turkeys, coyotes, bobcats, cougars, grouse, quail, and bear. The county that this ranch is located in puts more bulls and bucks into Boone and Crocket than any other county in Oregon.
USFS: There is approximately 3000 square miles of National Forest that is adjacent to the ranch. This is a huge opportunity for recreation out your back door. Four wheeling, snowmobiling, hiking, camping, fishing mountain lakes, and anything else you can think of is available. This ranch also provides a haven for the elk and deer as soon as hunting season starts. The proximity and topography allow the elk and deer to “funnel” into this property.
General Information:
The beauty of this ranch is not often found anywhere in the United States. A fish bearing stream flowing through irrigated meadows and a backdrop of timbered hills is something that most people dream about. This ranch is secluded but still has good access to town. John Day is around 30 minutes away and offers most things everything from a new hospital to hardware and groceries. Climate ranges from the mid to upper 70’s in the summer to 20’s and 30’s during the winter months. Rarely do ranches like this make it to the market before friends, family or acquaintances buy them. If you are looking for a ranch that is not only beautiful but offers quality hunting and recreation, look no further.
