There are numerous building sites with spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and sweeping up the FT Valley of Rapphannock County. Nearby is Rapidan Camp, privately purchased by President Herbert Hoover in 1928 as a fly-fishing retreat from his labors in Washington, D.C. Also now known as Camp Hoover, the President and his wife, Lou Henry hired an architect and built 13 rustic structures to house staff and guests. Among the latter they entertained Winston Churchill, Teddy Roosevelt, Charles Lindbergh, Thomas Edison and other world leaders. When Hoover left office he donated the Camp to the Nation and it continued to serve Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman as the first Camp David and the Boy Scounts of America. Today it is still in use as a diplomatic retreat.
