The ranch is fenced and cross-fenced with new fencing to provide for easy rotation of livestock. Each pasture has water piped to troughs to insure plenty of water for the livestock and wildlife throughout the ranch. Eight water wells supply water for the ranch and a rural water pipeline serves as another source of water. Numerous surface tanks are scattered around the ranch and there is an 8 +/- acre lake fed by Hackberry Creek. Two creeks pass through the ranch……Hackberry Creek and Dry Hollow Creek. Hackberry Creek is a live, spring-fed creek that runs through most of the ranch. Several feeder draws empty into it as it winds its way through the ranch. Along the creek there are magnificent towering trees of several varieties including pecan, elm, live oak, and hackberry. The creek has several deep holes of water that are perfect for an afternoon fishing expedition. The water is crystal clear. In places where it runs over the rocks it has a beautiful blue-green color. All along the creek the vegetation thrives and offers the ideal habitat for the abundant wildlife. Deer, turkey, dove, quail, and ducks love this ranch and make it their home. The ranch has never been leased out for hunting so the wildlife feels safe and protected at Ellwood Spade Ranch. Driving through the ranch you will want to keep a sharp eye out because you are sure to have many sightings of the animals that live here.
The terrain is as diverse as you can imagine it would be on 9699 +/- acres. At the front part of the ranch which fronts paved hwy 163, for the most part you have excellent grassy pastures with scattered mesquites. Driving on into the ranch you begin to see the towering trees lining Hackberry Creek. Two windmills stand majestically by the creek as you dip down in the bottom land. Coming up out of the creek you see the Headquarters house standing stately along the creek where it has stood for over 100 years. From the sleeping porch on the front of the house you can watch the turkeys come in to roost in the tall pecan trees along the creek. Sights like this are priceless, but a common occurrence here at Ellwood Spade Ranch. Driving through the ranch you will find numerous draws, rocky ridges, high hills with views that seem endless, grassy meadows, mesas, and rock outcroppings along Dry Hollow Creek. Gazing over the ranch it is not hard to imagine the Indians and settlers as they once made this land their home.
The ranch has 3 homes…..the Headquarters, the Big House, and the Little House. All are in great condition and they are well placed within the ranch for privacy. All of them are along Hackberry Creek so you can enjoy the beauty and uniqueness of the creek from each home. As you sit on your porch or the living areas of each of the three homes you can watch the wildlife as it comes in for water or take refuge in the night.
