Cornay Ranch
The Cornay Ranch is a scenic big game hunting and working cattle ranch which encompasses 9,521 acres of both deeded and state lease lands. The ranch is located in northeastern New Mexico about 35 miles east of Raton, and near Folsom, New Mexico. The ranch has been in the same ownership since the 1860s. With grassland plains, tree covered canyons and escarpments, the terrain is ideal for big game including elk, deer and antelope.
LOCATION
The main ranch is located between Capulin and Folsom, New Mexico on State Hwy 325 and a separate 320-acre parcel of summer grazing/hunting land located 14 miles southwest of Folsom off of Johnson Mesa and State Hwy 72. The ranch adjoins the Capulin Volcano National Monument and is the centerpiece of the Raton Clayton volcanic field.

The Cornay Ranch is comprised of 4,759 acres deeded and 4,762 acres State of New Mexico land lease for a combined total of 9,521 acres. The carrying capacity of the ranch is estimated at 200 Animal Units (AUs). Water is provided by springs, windmills, a solar well and dirt tanks. The fences vary in age with some newer fence as well as some older fence. The deeded and lease lands are interspersed and have been controlled by the ranch for decades. The cost of the State of New Mexico lease lands is $4,264.51 per year under a five-year lease expiring 9/30/2023.
IMPROVEMENTS
The building improvements are older yet functional with a main home, trailer house, horse barn, livestock shed and corrals. There is an older abandoned home as well as numerous old parked vehicles and equipment.
WILDLIFE AND RECREATION
The ranch offers elk, deer, bear and antelope hunting in New Mexico hunting units 57 and 58. Unlimited licenses on all three big game animals can be purchased over the counter with the owners permission. While the ranch has not been enrolled in the Landowner license program in recent years, a Landowner tag program is available through the New Mexico Game and Fish Department.
HISTORY
The area is rich in history spanning from the young large field volcanoes, discovery of Folsom Man, hunting grounds for Comanche and other Indian tribes, and early day train robber, Black Jack Kethum. Much of this history is documented and available at the Folsom Museum in Folsom, New Mexico.
SUMMARY
With over 9,500 acres the Cornay Ranch offers a large land resource with both working ranch capabilities and big game hunting opportunities. The ranch has a mix of open grasslands and timbered recreational lands and has been in the same family for many years.
