The farm is located within the Catherine Creek hunting Unit #53. At the wilderness boundary it borders the Minam Unit #60.

Snowmobiling

The ability to leave from the property with no trailering. Options include traveling up the Moss Springs road. Other cross country areas are available for those who venture off the main road.

ATV

Travel from the farm on your UTV or ATV for mountainous adventures picking morels, looking at wildlife or just going for a joyride. Minutes from the property there are thousands of acres of public lands.

Hiking

Moss Springs trailhead provides a 27-mile wilderness loop originating at this location. The trailhead is popular with stock users as it offers a large stock vehicle parking area, loading ramp, feed bunks, and holding facilities. Although the graveled forest road is steep and narrow, many visitors enjoy the site to gain quick access to the Minam River Lodge.

History of County/City:

Early History

Although Native Americans, mountain men, and packers spent much time in the Cove area it wasn’t until the last day of 1861 that Samuel Cowles and his niece Fannie Pauline pitched a tent in what is now Cove and became its first permanent residents. During 1862 many settlers moved into the community, which was then called Forest Cove.

At first, outgoing mail was left at the Cowles store and transported to the post office in Union. On Saturdays, James Hendershot, the owner of a stage stop at what is now called Phy’s Point, would bring the mail from Union to Cove. Families from miles around would gather at the Dixie School on the chance they would receive a letter from friends or family back home. A more traditional post office was soon formed in Forest Cove but in 1868 the post office department ruled that the name too closely resembled Forest Grove and after much local protest Cove assumed its present name.

Ownership History:

The orchard was settled in 1904 by the McNeill family. They owned and operated a cherry orchard and small cattle ranch until they sold to the Towle family. The Towle’s operated the orchard until 2009 when it was purchased and operated as Buck Acres. During this time, the orchard was converted into the pedestrian orchard you see today. The current owners purchased the orchard in January 2021 as Forest Cove Acres. This sale is no fault of the orchard, both owners have taken unexpected career advancements necessitating a possible sale and relocation

Education:

Cove Charter School serves 252 students in grades Kindergarten-12. Cove Charter School placed in the top 50% of all schools in Oregon for overall test scores (math proficiency is top 50%, and reading proficiency is top 50%) for the 2020-21 school year. The student:teacher ratio of 15:1 is lower than the Oregon state level of 17:1.
