Any die-hard waterfowl hunter has either been a part of or heard stories from about historic waterfowl camps. From the feeling of anticipation as one's head to camp to sit around the campfire reliving fabled tales of past years prior to opening morning to telling new stories of the days hunt are all part of what makes “duck camp” great! Before I continue, just take a look at the aerial photo for this property which is situated on the shores of Lake Monongalia more commonly referred to as “Mud Lake”. Mud Lake is located just north of New London and is the northernmost of 3 main basins of the Middle Fork Crow River Reservoir. The reservoir total area consists just shy of 2,300 acres with Mud Lake making up approx. 1,500 of those acres and according to the DNR Lake survey report, is typically less than 4 feet deep. Similar to on this property, there are a variety of areas on the basin with a cattail fringe along with several emergent vegetation areas out in the middle of it allowing a multitude of hunting locations to accommodate any wind direction. Being a large water body, the lake will not only provide for early season birds but some late season shoots as well. The property itself consists of basically the middle portion of an upland wooded point that extends into the lake. Access to the property is from a shared easement road for this property and other properties on the point which is gated. There is an older cabin on the property and even though its glory years are behind it, I’m here to tell you it’s about the location and secluded setting that made me just stare at it, think about again all the stories it had to tell and have thoughts on what I would do to update and revive it for the future. Love waterfowl hunting but would still like to deer hunt? It may not be a traditional deer hunting property but the property is located in a general area with tons of deer and there is plenty of sign on the property. If you take one look at the aerial photos and even more so if you click on the “interactive map” tab above the opening pic and zoom into the slough east of the wooded portion of the property, you will notice all the deer trails. That east-facing wooded point acts as a connecting hub for multiple trails. I also wouldn’t rule out a turkey or two on the property as well. Switching gears from hunting, even though the deeper portion of the entire reservoir is down on the south basin known as Mill Pond, according to the latest DNR fisheries report, there are species such as crappie, largemouth bass, northern, perch, sunfish, and even walleye within the reservoir. The 2018 survey showed over twice as many walleye per gillnet compared to the historical average with the average size being large at 3.67 lbs. or 20.7 inches. So, if you’re in the market for not only a very unique opportunity but have that old-fashioned duck camp spirit burning in your soul, give me a shout and I’d love to discuss this very affordable historic property with your further.
