Pine Island History

"Thomas Lee (1858-1936) of Westport, New York, came to the Beaufort area in 1896. Two years later, he constructed the shingled hunting lodge of Pine Island- his winter home for more than 20 years. By nature, Lee was an outdoorsman: naturalist, craftsman, hunter, and fisherman. Lee Shared Pine Island with Dr. Arthur Elting from 1919 to 1926, selling his interest to Elting in that final year. Today, Lee is remembered most for having designed a chair for sitting outdoors at his hilly New York home; while he called it a "Westport," it is now widely known as an "Adirondack" chair. Dr. Elting, a distinguished surgeon, was a graduate of Yale and the Johns Hopkins Medical School. He died in 1948 at the age of 75, leaving his wife a life interest in all of his Albany and Beaufort properties. After personal bequests, his residual estate was to go to Phillips Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. A school trustee sold Pine Island, plus the nearby St. Helenaville and Cherry Hill plantations, in 1949 to Theodore Ayer Randolph of Upperville, Virginia for $10,000. Less than two years later, all of the lands were transferred to Dr. Robert D. Johnson and his wife, Frances, of Syracuse, New York, who held on to them until after Hurricane Gracie in 1959. The Johnsons were renting out the property at the time and came down after the storm to check on the damage. Lowcountry timberman Harry Hanna of Estill, South Carolina, who already owned much property in the area, was then removing some of Pine Island's fallen trees. When Dr. Johnson said that he thought he should sell the land before another hurricane came through, Hanna agreed to buy it. In 1960 he did so, with his brother Leslie. Along with the property, the Hannas received a boat, Jeep, and all the household furniture, including two of the earliest examples of Lee's Adirondack chair." - Excerpt from Northern Money, Southern Land pages 101-104
