THE AREA

Rainelle was named for the Raine family. Thomas and his brother John Raine moved there from Pennsylvania in 1906 to begin the harvest of the large stand of virgin hardwoods abundant in the eastern United States. Their Meadow River Lumber Company operated for 60 years, and at one time was the largest hardwood sawmill in the world. In 1970, the owners sold it to Georgia-Pacific Corporation, which dismantled it and built a modern mill just across the Meadow River.

The historic Midland Trail, now part of U.S. Route 60, runs through the town as well as the Meadow River. As of 2010, there were approximately 1500 people residing in Rainelle.

The Greenbrier River is 173 miles long and is the last free-flowing river east of the Mississippi. It is an excellent river to float or canoe and is well known for its large and small mouth bass fishing. It is the gateway to water recreation and fun and is at most times lazy and easy to navigate. The Greenbrier River joins the New River in the town of Hinton, West Virginia.

The New River is the second oldest river in the world, preceded only by the Nile; it is the oldest river in North America. The New River is unique because it begins in Blowing Rock, N.C. and flows north through Virginia into West Virginia. The Nile and Amazon are the only other major rivers that also flow north. Year after year, it produces more citation fish than any other warm water river in WV. Small-mouth bass, large-mouth bass, crappie, catfish, sunfish, hybrid striped bass, and muskie are all common species of fish found in the New River and Bluestone Lake.

Bluestone Lake is over 2000 acres at summer pool and is the states third largest body of water. Great hunting and fishing opportunities abound at the 17,632 acre Bluestone Wildlife Area adjacent to the park and nearby Camp Creek State Forest.

Lewisburg, which is the Greenbrier County seat, was voted the Coolest Small Town in American in 2011 and is just a 30 minute drive to the thriving downtown historic district. The downtown boasts a year round live theatre, Carnegie Hall, several fabulous restaurants, shops and boutiques. There is also a modern hospital and all attendant medical facilities along with all the big box stores. The homes location lies within the required driving time for physicians working out the hospital.

The Greenbrier County Airport, which has WVs longest runway, is located just 30 minutes away and has daily flights to Atlanta and Washington DC. The world famous Greenbrier Resort is about 35 minutes drive and Snowshoe Ski Resort is about 2 hours drive. Roanoke is 120 minutes, DC is 4 hours and Charlotte is 3 hours away.
