By 1920, Big Traverse Bay developed into one of these fishing communities. In the 1950s a breakwall was built. Today the community remains an active fishing village - Vintage gasoline pumps, net reels, cedar shake-covered fishing buildings, ice houses and saunas are still in use. The beaches going north along this side of the Keweenaw Peninsula are all sand dunes, and there are picturesque spots that can be visited. Big Traverse Bay is often referred to as 'The Waikiki Beach of the Keweenaw Peninsula,' because of its white sand beach that is more than 100 feet deep, and more than three miles long. From the home's location you have access to some of the most scenic natural and historic areas of the State, that provide activites to enjoy during every season of the year! There are nice blueberry patches in the area, and the Schoolcraft Township Mink Farm Day Park is a great beach park that is right next to the lighthouse.
